About Libra Swimming Academy

Libra Swimming Academy is owned by Pam Reynecke who has been teaching swimming for more than 30 years. Pam has received Swimming South Africa’s Gold Award for her service to swimming and in 2007 was one of 3 recipients of their Instructor of the Year award.

Pam has been operating this swim school centre from Virgin Active, Centurion for more than 10 years. The centre was previously part of Tadpoles Swimming School that had started in Lyttelton Centurion in 1990. Tadpoles was run as a close corporation with Pat Groenewald and Pam as members. In July 2006 it was decided to split Tadpoles into 3 swim schools. As a result Pam took over as sole proprietor of the centre at Virgin Active Centurion and changed the name to Libra Swimming Academy. Pat took over as sole proprietor of the swim school at Virgin Active Menlyn and its name is now simply Pat’s Swim School. Tadpoles Swimming School continued to operate in Lyttelton until 2009 but the lessons held in Lyttelton now fall under Pat’s Swim School. In 2009 Libra Swimming Academy expanded and now also operates from the Virgin Active Club in Eco Park. Triathlon and Open-water training is now offered at Virgin Active Centurion and Rooihuiskraal.

In June 2005 Pam came across Total immersion an adult teaching program devised by Terry Laughlin from the USA. After attending one of their workshops it immediately became obvious to Pam that the methods we had used previously to teach children needed to be adapted. Pam then spent 2 years carefully working out a program that would help children learn the revolutionary methods and techniques developed by Total Immersion but in such a way that the methods and techniques would suit each child’s age and capabilities. The results we have achieved since then have been nothing short of amazing. In July 2007 Pam went over to the USA to spend time training with Terry Laughlin and is is now an accredited Total Immersion Coach. Please see our Total Immersion pages for more insight into this wonderful program.

Our mission is to teach as many children and adults to swim as possible, but we will not compromise on the quality of our swimming lessons. We therefore have small classes and our instructors are not only qualified and registered with Swimming South Africa but receive further, ongoing training from Pam in order to maintain the very high standard of instruction that Libra Swimming Academy has built its renowned reputation on. For more information about our instructors please go to our Instructors page.

We encourage those pupils of ours, who show the talent and motivation, to move on to the competitive swimming world and we are very proud of some top swimmers who started their careers at either Tadpoles Swimming School or Libra Swimming Academy – most notable of these is Cameron van der Burgh, FINA World Cup holder 2008 and 2009 and holder of many world records. Please visit the gallery of our Former Pupils to see more.

We work very closely with Centurion Swimming Club under head coach Wendy Albertyn and many of our former pupils can be seen training up and down the pools at Virgin Active Centurion and Cornwall Hill College under her watchful eye. We are especially proud of Kira Baptiste – Victrix Ludorum for the Guppies (10-11yr olds) at the Northern Tigers Swimming Championships in December 2009.
